“...less than 25% of paramedics reported carrying mechanical suction equipment to the scene of medical aid calls despite utiliz- ing these devices during 50% of advanced airway procedures.”
Studies have shown that both civilian and military medical providers often electively leave suction devices out of their “first in” kits, significantly increasing the risk of patient morbidity and mortality. In one study conducted at an urban level 1 trauma center, less than 25% of paramedics reported car- rying mechanical suction equipment to the scene of medical aid calls despite utilizing these devices during 50% of advanced airway procedures. Half of the paramedics surveyed in the study reported equipment malfunctions with portable suction units affecting patient care at least once in their careers.
